Joe Amaral, MD joined Venture Investors in 2019 as the Chief Medical and Scientific Officer. Joe works closely with the Fund’s Managing Directors and portfolio companies in exploring new opportunities; providing guidance and feedback leveraging his 35-year healthcare career. His diverse and successful experiences in healthcare leadership have created a unique skill set of pioneering clinical experience, healthcare care system leadership, and worldwide corporate business management and new technology development and adoption.

“Dr. Joe” most recently was VP of Surgical Innovation (J&J Ethicon); VP Surgical Science/Chief Scientific Officer (Ethicon Energy); and VP of Science and Technology Medical Devices and Regenerative Medicine (Johnson and Johnson Corporation). Prior to that he served as CEO and President of Rhode Island and Hasbro Children’s Hospital In Providence RI where he led a $60 Million turnaround. Prior to that he served as Chairman Department of Surgery Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University, Chief of Surgery of Rhode Island and Lifespan Hospitals and President of University Surgical Associates.

Key Achievements:

  • Co-developed the Harmonic Scalpel, the first and leading ultrasonically activated surgical device.
  • Internationally recognized as pioneer in minimally invasive surgery, innovation and technology development.
  • Developed clinical research trial and registry for first in man experience with flexible microwave ablation for patients with medically inoperable lung cancer.
  • Clinical Research documented elimination of adult onset diabetes, reversal of vitamin B12 deficiency with oral supplements,maintenance of long-term weight loss following bariatric surgery.
  • Championed and co-led multiple diligence and acquisition projects, including: Megadyne, NeuWave, Techsomed and Histosonics.
  • Author of two textbooks, 26 chapters in textbooks and 79 Peer reviewed scientific manuscripts.
